I have been reading some of the recent posts about XP OEMs and retail
versions. What I would really like to know is how it is that one OEM can be
tied to one machine.I have an OEM xp copy and why can't I just stick it onto
another computer, say if I bought a new one? And how would the folks at
microsoft know if I installed two copies of one OEM?How does it all work?
Not the most enthusing question, I know, but one that many users would love
to know about.

Hi,

.......What I would really like to know is how it is that one OEM can be
tied to one machine.

The install disk can easily check the brand of motherboard ans CPU
installed, look for the proper companies parts that originally assembled
the computer, or even read the BIOS and find that the software you're
wanting to use wasn't intended for that computer type.

No one is going to come knocking on your door when you try installing on
more than one machine, hell, it might even work, but don't hold your
breath.

I hash is created (basically a unique identifier created based on the
hardware in your computer) and that gets bound to your license key/computer.
Change a piece of hardware and the hash value changes. I'm not sure of the
mechanics behind how MS can tell whether or not the hardware that's been
changed is deemed just a minor upgrade that will allow the key to continue
working though.

Because the OEM License is specifically written to be non-transferable;
that's one of the reasons it's so much cheaper than a retail license.

Because the first time you installed that OEM license, you agreed to
abide by the terms of that license. If your given word, or your
signature on any other type of contract, means anything to you, you
wouldn't even consider reneging on the EULA. Only a person utterly
lacking in integrity would consider doing so.

In reality, there is no way Microsoft can prevent all theft of its
products. WPA is designed to make it more difficult, just as are the
locks on your house and car doors, but cannot stop the truly determined
thief.

Not the most enthusing question, I know, but one that many users would love
to know about.

sorry to disappoint you there but it's my brother computer- I never agreed
to anything.

such strong comments ! I don't have to remind you this is not a forum for
ethical or moral guidance. I DON'T need YOUR advice !!! You must be one of
those people who think all laws are God's law.Just like some of our dam
leaders who are introducing newer and newer laws to take away every innocent
persons freedoms and liberties. Just see the p*triot Act ripping up the
constitution.

*Good luck* to you my friend.

Bruce Chambers and other MVPs always take high moral ground and they try
to thrust it on everybody's throat who comes their way. I won't be
surprised if they themselves have lots of pirated software on their own
systems!!. It is always the case with people like that. Just like
Politicians who say one thing in public but do totally something else in
private. Do you remember that US Senator who sent text messages to page
boys? It is called hypocrisy:
