How do you turn ON the presentation mode?

Yesterday, in a meeting, I was using a laptop which was interfaced with the
multi-media equipment in the conference room. I kept hitting Function F8 and
the laptop screen would blink and then say it was not in "presentation mode".
I have never seen this before.

Each brand is different; each model may be different.
Let people know what brand/model you've got and with luck, someone will know the
answer.
