what I think is my serial number or activation code for my version of

which I thought would set these values, but that did not work.

I have one other oddity that makes me think I might have a Registry
problem. When I restart Windows, my Most Recently Used programs list
under the Start button is always set back to the default (i.e. Tour
XP, Windows Messenger, etc.). I'd like to fix this problem as well,
but have struggled trying to find a solution in the on-line Knowledge

Thanks in advance!!

do into Registry by Clicking on Start then Run and enter regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

It's not used by office at all. Office uses the current users name as the Registered To. It asked you when you first started the program.

EG For User A it says Reg To User A, For User B it says Reg To User B.

To change the name you want office to use
Tools - Options - User Info

Note this applies to Word 2000 and later. 97 and before only a reinstall can change the Registered To name for office but you can still set a user name for everything else.

Hi Ross,

How to change the company name and user name in Office XP programs
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=290528

For Office XP: Modify folder number as needed depending on Office version.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Installer\Userdata\SID\Products\GUID\InstallProperties

In the left pane change: RegOwner and RegCompany

Once done, naviagate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\UserInfo

Per:

Office 2000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Uninstall\{00000409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}]

Office XP
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Uninstall\{90280409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0050048383C9}]

Change the value of "RegCompany" and "RegOwner" to the required registered
company and user names.

Then find the following registry key for your Office version.

Office 2000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common]

Office XP
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common]

And rename the sub-key called "UserInfo" to "OldUserInfo".

Exit your registry, close all the Office programs and restart one. The
registered company should now be changed on both the splash screen and in
the About dialog box.

And rename it: OldUserInfo

Once done navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Data and delete the
Data subkey in the left pane.
