Formatting the drive is a pretty radical way to resolve a problem. First, I
would suggest, go to start>run and type "sfc /scannow"(no quotes and note
the space between the c and /). Have your XP disk at hand, you will probably
be prompted to insert it in the drive. If that does not resolve your
problem, try a repair install before you go to the extreme and format.

Disconnect all peripherals from the computer except the mouse, keyboard and
monitor before following either of the following.
