I have 10,000+ files that are search for phrases in the document. How can I
have this work in less than 20minutes ?. Isn't the index service on the
server for this problem ?. If it is how do you tell the windows explorer
search interface to use the servers index service. If I do the search on the
server result are returns in less than 10 sec. ?

Did you index the files from the searching PC? Indexing them on the server
won't help when searching from a networked PC.

This would require all workstations to have there own index which seems like
a bad idea. So what do the big corporate offices do ?

For one thing, they would probably not have 10,000 items in a single folder.

You haven't mentioned much about your setup ....are you using a domain? A
workgroup?

Server Role DC + File & Print Services Only.

Directories approx 10 main directories and multiple subdirectories. Within
all these subdirectories are 10,000+ files such as word, excel, text, images
etc. The summary OLE Properties are used and people often want to search for
files based keywords. Currently its impossible to search the tree in less
than 20 minutes which means it will never be used. I'm sure Microsoft thought
of this and have a process how a coproration would search network resources.

It doesn't seem like such a bad idea to me. There is no other way to do
what you want. Even a third-party indexing utility will still require each
PC to have its own index.
