How do you make more than one color in a single image Transparent?

There is a picture i have on a presentation and it has colors to it. White,
black and red. I have another larger image underneath that pic. i want o be
able to see alot of the pic underneath so i tried to make some of the colors
on the overlapping image transparent but can only do one at a time...please
help me out...its bugging the heck out of me
