I XP onwards -Use Custom animation > emphasis either flash bulb or change
fill color.( Choose a contrasting color)
Double click the entry and in timing set a repeat - either a number or until
next click.

ok, I have done all those things, however, it does not flash or blink when I
open the document, only when I click on the play option. Is there anyway to
make it blink when the document is opened?

You have to have the presentation in show view (View|Slide Show or hit the
F5 button) to see the animations. Or, as you mentioned, hit the Play button
to preview. Animated items don't animate while in normal editing view -- I
mean, it would be pretty hard to edit a slide when all the stuff on it was
moving around, you know?
