Hi Brian: I have essentially the same issues Jeremy had. I'm running Vista
Home Premium 64 bit, and Outlook 2007. I can't find a 'Mail' applet anywhere
in Control Panel to add a new profile. The only other option that comes
close would be to add another computer user. Is this what I have to do?
Thanks. Rick.

You must enable viewing the 32 bit control panels to see it. I believe that's
under "Other Control Panel Options" when you open Control Panel.

Thanks, I got Outlook working in a jiffy. However, Word can't draw from the
address book, any thoughts on that?

Thanks so much again Brian. Specifically, I couldn't address an envelope
from the address book, everything seems to be working as it should now.

I have Outlook 2007 and Windows 7 and as you stated my problem is a "bug" how
do I fix it.

If you have Contacts in the Contacts folder but they are not accessible when
you click on the To button, check these settings:

Make sure the Contact folder is enabled as an email address book. Right
click the Contacts folder, choose Properties then Outlook Address Book. Is
the box to enable as email address book is checked?

If this is grayed out...

Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change existing directories or
address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present? If it isn't listed, add
it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed, then remove it and close
then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add it.

==> If you are using Outlook 2007 and the the checkbox is grayed, you'll
need to make a new profile as you can't add the Outlook Address Book service
due to a bug.

That grayed out box happened in my case also. I have a vista, Office
2007
and i was trapped with only a contact lis. I solved this issue by right
clicking on the Contacts bar, right above New Group, got the properties
option, clicked on the Addree Book tab and overwrote Contacts with
Address
book. Done, now my formerly Contacts list is all in my Address Book.

IanRoy,

I am using Word 2000 and Outlook 2000.
I did right click on Contacts and thenon Properties.
I get the Contacts Properties box and I then click on Outlook Address
Book
tab and at the top it says Contacts and there is a check mark in the
box next
to the wording:
"Show this folder as the email address book" but the box and check mark
is
grayed out.

Any other suggestions as to why I cannot access the address book when I
use
th Word program and use Send to Email Recipient function ?

Thanks,
Paul

Hi, Paul;

I am using Outlook 2003. However, I have a tutorial for Outlook 2000,
and
that shows "Folder" as one of the items in the File menu for the
Inbox for
that version. My tutorial doesn't show the file menu for the Contacts
folder,
so I am not sure "Folder" is there also, but I would have expected
it. If you
are using personalized menus, did you wait for the full menu to
appear?

Another way: If right-clicking Contacts in the Outlook Bar desn't
give you a
"Properties" option, open the folder list (from the View Menu in
Outlook
2000). Then right click the Contacts folder on that list, and choose
Properties. I don't know what you will see when you get there, but
that is
where I'd look.

If you are not using Word 2000, you may not get this function to work
with
Outlook 2000. I am not sure, but they may have to be the same
version/year.

Regards,
Ian.

:

IanRoy,

It was a longer hal time show so I went to try what you suggested.

I am using Oulook 2000 - I can't find any of the items you are
mentioning.

I click on File, but I don't see Folder and thenI can't go any
further.

Are you using Outlook 2003 ?

Please let me know.

Paul

What hasn't been made clear in these discussions is that there is apparently
an incompatibility between older Outlook pst files and newer ones. This is
the bug that Diane is talking about.
So...
To those still looking for the fix.
0) Export your contacts. A Comma delimited file will be fine. This is just
in case you don't care to import your old mail to your new profile.
1) Close Outlook >completely< (No quick start toolbars, OK?)
2) Go to the Control Panel => Mail
(possibly Control Panel => User Accounts => Mail, depending on how
your folder views are defined.)
3) Setup a new mail profile, and just let Outlook decide where to put things.
4) Make sure "Show Names from the Contacts" is checked (as discussed
elsewhere in this thread.)
5) IMPORT old mail - don't just 'point' Outlook at the old data file in the
account properties dialog. Importing will convert your file's format to the
version of Outlook you are using.
If you don't want all that crummy old mail, just import the contacts
that exported in step zero.

ciao

This is "advice" no one should follow. There is never any reason to export
and import Outlook data using non-Outlook format.
