How do you create relative links?

The documentation for Word talks about relative links,
but when I try to create them, it automatically prepends
file://C:\ etc. That means that if the documents are
moved, all the links will break. Does anyone have a
workaround? I need to go through all our documents
(thousands of them) and change the absolute links to
relative links so we can move the files into a common
repository. It's a nightmare! If anyone has any ideas,
please help!!

Thank you

The hyperlink that Word _displays_ seems to be always the full path to the
target; but it actually stores the relative path if that's how you created
the link: so the links still work when you move the set of files. You can
verify this by displaying field codes (Alt-F9) and look at the addresses in
the hyperlink fields.

Thank you very much for your help! That is weird
behavior, I must say--to have the actual hyperlink be
different from the one that's shown in a mouseover is
misleading. Oh, well. I appreciate your help very
much! You just saved me a lot of grief!!
