How do you create a templates with sequential numbering?

I would like to create a template that when opened gives the document a
unique number. For example: the first time the template is opened the number
0001 appears, then the second time the template is opened the number 0002
appears, and so on. Any ideas on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.
