How do I work with documents with multiple authors?

I have to maintain a set of couments which are authored by many people.
Instead of just changing the content, they also change the format. Then I
have to re-format again and again. Is there any way I can avoid this - or at
leats take some of the hard work out of it?
 
If you are using Word 2003 or Word 2007 you can limit the formatting of the
document to a selection of styles; that should make your work easier.
