How do I use the PROPER function?

I've used the suggestions here to change all lower case names to Proper and
to no avail. Column A has the names. I put the formula in B and then did
the copy values back to A. Didn't work. What did I do wrong?

Did you use Edit/Paste Special/Values when you pasted the values back
into column A?

If so, you've not given enough information to make an analysis. What
does "Didn't work" mean? Crash? Didn't copy? Wrong values? Wrong
Formulae? something else?

What do you mean by "didn't work"? You should be able to enter
=PROPER(A1) in cell B1, fill down as far as you need to go, then
copy column B, and Paste Special Values back into column A. You
can then delete or clear column B.

That is exactly what I did. But the A column w. the names then says
=Proper(a1) even after the paste special values. It's like the paste
function isn't working at all. I've used the formula before but this time I
cannot make the function perform.

That should work exactly the way JE and Chip said... are you sure you right
clicked on column A, highlighted "Paste Special...", and then chose "Values"?

Yes I am absolutely sure. I've been using Excel for years and never had
something NOT work like this. And it's way too many names to do manually.
I'm stuck and time is money.

Eureka, I copied the whole sheet to another workbook and started over w. the
Proper function and it worked. Don't know why but don't care. Tnx. to you
all for your help.
