How do I use microsoft's thesis template to write my own thesis w.

I am trying to prepare a document for my thesis using microsoft's "thesis"
template. I need some very basic instructions. I have learned about styles
but I find that it's not intuitive to apply what I know to adapting the
thesis template for my own purposes. It's the table of contents that has me a
bit confused. If anyone knows of a very good tutorial that specifically
addresses the thesis template and gives step by step instructions I'd like to
know about it. Thanks very much.
