If you are pressing the Insert button, you are probably turning insert mode
off and overtype mode on. Press Insert again to return to the normal
behavior.

I was very happy to see that we can turn this back on in Office 2007. I rely
heavilyon ovrtype mode when editing documents. It's especially helpful when
copying and pasting statistical text where I just need to change a few
numbers here and there - I can just type over! I hope this function never
disapppears, although I hear the Insert key is left off newer keyboards -
scary. (I understand some typists are annoyed if they accidentally hit the
button, but just be careful and it's not a problem.)
This solution was most helpful when it came to Word 2007 - but how can I
configure Outlook 2007 to use the 'insert' key on the keyboard to overwrite
text?
While you have the message editor open (for a new message or a reply), click
the Office button > Editor Options and then the rest of the procedure is the
same as in Word.

By default, the Insert key on the keyboard toggles between Insert and
Overtype modes. Is this not working for you?
