How do I unplug a Flash/Jump Drive?

What is the procedure for unplugging a flash jump USB drive from a PC
running Windows 98SE? As long as the access lamp is not flashing can I
just unplug it or should I right button click on It's icon in My
computer folder and first select eject before physically unplugging it?

Always use 'safe unplug'.
The led is not much more than a gadget.

If you disable write caching (I forget where it is on win9x
but maybe in some performance window somewhere), AND if your
drive is the type that indicates writing with continual
flashing, it should be safe to unplug when done flashing...
but you should test this before trusting it.

Choosing to wait till it's done flashing then "Eject" is the
safer alternative.

What is safe unplug? I don't see that as a option.

Click on the icon in the taskbar.
A safe unlock window should appear.
First you stop the device, then the window tells you it is safe
to unplug the device now.
(And occasionally you get a message that the device couldn't be
stopped and hence cannot be unplugged right now.)

Not sure what software may be with your drive but mine is a verbatim
and it has nothing in the taskbar so I will just make sure right
button on it and say eject as the person above suggested. thanks all
for the input
