How do I unmerge cells?

I need to unmerge cells - went to format cells, alignment, but merge cells
box is unchecked already - just highlighted.
 
Just like any other formatting option, you have to select the merged cell(s)
before going to the Format Cells dialog.

Perhaps they are not merged, perhaps they have been "Center across
Selection" in the Horizontal selection box of the alignment dialog.
