Hi! I have Windows 2000 Professional installed on my computer. A
couple of weeks ago we got hit with 4 Trojan Virus's which wrecked
havoc to our computer. Our HP All-in-One Printer is giving up trouble
and after talking to HP and Microsoft it has been determined that our
operating system is corrupt and we basically need to do a reinstall.
Can someone please tell me how to go about doing this. We have a
Compaq computer that originally came with Windows 98 and had Windows
2000 installed in January '04!! THANKS for any assistance you may be
able to provide!!

You need the Windows 2000 CD-ROM and life will be easier if you can boot from the CD-ROM drive. If that is the case you save what you have in the operating system. Not programs usually just your data. You will need to save it to a different partition. Remeber if you have been infected with a virus then ANYTHING (most - not txt files) you save from that Op sys is suspect. Then you reboot with the CD-ROM in the drive and you will choose install a new operating system. Format the partition usually as NTFS and that's it. Follow the prompts. You do not uninstall an Operating System. You remove it.

Boot from the win2k cd and do a fresh install. When
prompted, delete and format partition. You may have to
press F6 for new hard disk controllers if you have the
newer hard disks installed.

Hope this info is useful.

Simply boot from the Win2K installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

OK! I tried following these instructions and when the CD boots up it
gives me a blue screen with this message:

File\i386\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded.

Error Code 4.

Where do I go from here? How do I get pass this problem?

Any help is appreciated!!

Kendra did you reformat the harddrive? Are you installing on the harddrive that is the Master on your primary IDE cable? Where the boot partition is? A file not loading means it is trying to run which means in your case you have got as far as the second reboot. Is that the case?
