How do I ungroup non-ungroupable objects?

I transfered a plot over from Excel (as a Windows Metafile or Enhanced
Metafile), so I can ungroup it. But I reach a point where I end up with a set
of objects that I cannot ungroup. (All of the bars on a bar chart
corresponding to the same colour.) This is clearly an assembly of objects -
in this case bars/rectangles. Why am I not able to ungroup these objects? How
do I?

I've not ever noticed this behavior. Is it happening in PPT / Excel 2003?

Does it work any better if you just copy/paste the plot (chart) and ungroup
that?

I've seen similar things in 2007. Haven't got a workaround for the problem
yet, though.

Yeah, I've seen it with tickmarks in 2007 -- but I haven't run across it
with the bars themselves. Wouldn't surprise me, though.

If we can repro, we can write it up as a bug and cross our fingers that it
gets fixed in the next version.
