how do I unblock "modification is denied, selection is blocked"

When I was trying to add something to an existing document, I could not do
it. It says "modification is denied, selection is blocked". How can I solve
this issue? any suggestions?

If this is a trial version of Word 2007, then most likely the trial period
has expired.
