how do I type any characters with the caret sign in excel

In word if you need to type the caret over an "a" or "e" you just type ctrl+^
followed by a or e. This does not happen excel. I would like to know how I
would be able to do so in excel.
 
I don't think there is an easy way apart from using insert symbol or using
ALT and the ASCII code eg ALT+0195 will give you Ã.

You could always set up an autocorrect as a workaround.
