How do I turn off Task Panes permanently?

I don't like that when I click File, New the task pane pops open and I now
have to click a third time to get the templates window to open. How can I
make it so that File, New brings the window up like it did in Word 2000 and
97?
 
On the Commands tab of Tools | Customize, look for FileNewDialog in the All
Commands list; drag that to the File menu or (better) the Standard toolbar,
replacing the default File | New... command or the New button if desired.
