WORD is saving the backup of all my files EVERY time...not just when I'm in
the file doing something. After I save the file changes, the backup copy is
still there. I'm having to manually delete these as they take up double hard
drive space. Don't know how this started in the first place. HELP!

The backup option is at tools > options > save. I suggest you leave it. The
space they take up on the hard drive is minimal and you *will* lose a
document and find the backup invaluable. It doesn't take much effort to
occasionally delete the surplus.

Are you talking about *.asd files or *.wbk files? If the former, it may be
that Word doesn't have the needed permissions to delete files. If the
latter, then you have enabled Tools | Options | Save: Automatically create
backup copy.
