How do I turn off automatic re-formatting of cells

I am opening CSV files and don't want Excel to make any automatic changes to
the data in any cell. Some of the data looks like a date i.e. 03MAR. Excel,
of coarse, changes this to 3/3/2004. How do I stop this?
