How do I stop mobile download of my email?

I use AOL email. I don't want Outlook to autmatically take my email off of
my desktop and put it in my Smartphone. I prefer to check it if and when I
choose. There is a lot that I don't understand, but I'm learning as fast as
I can.

That is not something caused by Outlook but is done by the sync application
you have installed for your mobile device and the way that you have
configured its sync operation. It's better that you ask this in a newsgroup
for your sync application or mobile device.
