Hi,

If Excel is prompting for a 'save' then something has changed. For example
this could be a cell with a formula in that looks at the current time.

If you haven't changed anything else then it's probably safe to ignore this
and simply close without saving but I wouldn't do it and if you want to know
why then this forum has posts from people asking how they can get their data
back because they forgot to save.

When competing hypotheses are otherwise equal, adopt the hypothesis that
introduces the fewest assumptions while still sufficiently answering the
question.

trip_to_tokyo has the right idea, but be careful. People tend to make
mistakes when they are in a hurry...

Was your excel file created with an earlier version of excel than that used to open the file?

Excel will always recalculate formulas when the file was created with an earlier version of Excel ... regardless of whether or not you have made any changes.

So for example if you use excel 2010 to open a file created with excel 2003 on exit you will be prompted to
save even if all you did was to look at a figure without actually making any changes. One solution is to recreate the file using the current version of excel that you are using.
