How do I stop Excel from auto-inserting a date?

I am trying to type in 12-56 but Excel continues to format the cell into
Dec-56. How do I stop this from happening?
 
Preformat the cell as text, then do the data entry.

Or

Start your entry with an apostrophe: '12-56
