When opening letters written in the past it enters the current date. How do I
stop this it is driving me crazy. Thanks.

Your letters contain a DATE field. Press Alt+F9 to display the field code
and change it to CREATEDATE. Alt+F9 to toggle back and F9 to update. For
more on date fields, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/DateFields.htm. You would do well to
use a CREATEDATE field in the template used to create these letters (or
insert the date as plain text instead of a field).
