There are two answers to this question depending on what you mean by "auto
styles."
1. If you mean that Word is applying its built-in styles based on its best
guess of what you're trying to do, then disable "Define styles based on my
formatting" on the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect
Options. (And see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TameAutoFormat.htm)
2. If by "auto styles" you mean things like Normal+Bold, then these are not
styles but "formatting," and you can hide this by clearing the check box for
"Keep track of formatting" on the Edit tab of Tools | Options.
