How do I speed up Word 2007?

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit version. The computer is an Acer
5610Z with 1.6 GHz and 1 G Ram. Not slow with other programs but extremely
slow opening and closing word document. If I try to open three at once it
can take a whole minute. Same thing on closing them real slow. Same thing
switching between documents. Performance is unacceptable. Any solutions?
 
Do you by any chance have Adobe Acrobat (Standard or Professional) version 7
or earlier? I found that Word became a lot faster when I disabled Adobe's
toolbar add-in (which didn't work in Word 2007 in any event... while the PDF
printer driver works just fine, and is not affected).

If not Adobe... do you have other add-ins that might not be getting along
well with Word 2007?
