How do I specify a different sent mail folder (on IMAP account)?

When I leave the office, I want to be able to view previously sent message,
but Outlook stores a copy of the sent mail locally. I want to also save a
copy in the IMAP sent mail folder so I can view it when I check my mail
through the portal system when I'm out of town.

Create a sending rule that moves a copy of the sent message to the desired
IMAP folder.

Brian i guess my question is this then. I've been a LOOONG time pop3 user and
have recently switched to IMAP to hopefully benefit my mobile device. We are
going to exchange in a few months and i had a few questions about IMAP.

I have the rule in place. everytime i send a message it copies it to my IMAP
sent file. here are my two questions though on this thread:

1) it marks those sent messages in my imap folder as unread. no big deal,
but aggravating.
2) it puts them in my sent folder "locally" as well. I can see problems down
the road when both of these sent folders (in imap and on .pst locally) start
archiving the same message. there will be tons of duplicates.

any suggestions?
thanks
Jason

Nothing to be done about this, though. That's just the way an outgoing rule
works.

Disable the option to save sent items in the Sent Items folder and you won't
get duplicates. If you have annother account in addition to the IMAP
account and you want outgoing messages saved in the normal way for that
account, then make sure the IMAP rule contains the "stop processing more
rules" action and make a second rule that moves all outgoing messages to
Sent Items and place it after the IMAP rule in the list.

great info. not sure if i did it right "rules wise", but i think i did and
still didn't work. i'm getting sent messages sent to local sent folder and
imap. i need it set to save sent messages because i have other pop3 accounts
that i'm running beside this one.

What version of Outlook?

it is, because i have two other pop3 accounts i need to save sent messages.
my office work is very data critical and in using "search software" i need to
be able to pull up past sent messages at times that help us form our "opinion
emails", etc.

it's no big deal, just dont' like the "unread messages" in my sent folder.
right now the way it's working they are being sent to both. i just think it's
going to be an "archival hell" when my archive starts up Monday.

As I said in my first post, disable that option and then create a "catch
all" outgoing rule that copies EVERYTHING to the Sent Items folder. Make
sure the IMAP rule contains the "stop processing more rules" action and
place the "catch all" rule after the IMAP rule.

i tried that. very tough...i'll keep trying.

while i have you on here and since you are so good, i searched for this and
didn't find it. i'm finally having new messages show up as unread. problem is
when they are read, my "inbox folder" still shows me having an unread message
even when i don't. this can be after 15-20 minutes, send and receive has been
hit a few times, etc. any ideas?

i know i asked an "unread" question on this thread and sorry about that. But
if i follow your advice below for the "sent messages", and create a catch all
account, etc. which "sent messages" are you saying it will send them all to.
My "imap" sent or "local" sent?

Not tough at all. It's simple, just two rules.

Are you subscribed to that folder in your send/receive group? Do you
download the entire message and not just the headers? What's your
send/'receive interval value? Outlook's IMAP transport isn't all that good,
in my opinion.

The "catch all" rule will put them in whatever folder you tell it to use.
Since you said you wanted that to be the Sent Items folder in your default
folder set, then choose that one.

Brian, you are all over google and i hate to start a new thread and ask
someone else, but wanted to knwo if i could ask you a windows mobile (outlook
mobile) question regarding sent items/imap, etc.

You may ask, but I can't guarantee I'll know the answer. I've played only a
little with IMAP on my Windows Mobile device.

i have sent messages saving (subscribed) on my desktop so they are available
on the mail server for my desktop, laptop and mobile device. I have "sent
items" subscribed on my mobile phone. it picks up any new "sent message" that
my desktop or laptop sends and of course puts it in my sent messages. BUT,
when i send a message on my mobile device, it saves it to my sent folders,
but when my desktop or laptop syncs with imap from my mail server, it doesn't
put that "sent from my mobile device" email in the imap sent foldes on my
desktop and laptop.

any ideas?

Right. IMAP accounts have no "Sent Items" folder of their own, except,
perhaps, in Outlook 2007. Sent Items are always placed int he delivery
location Sent Items folder. You can, however, use rules (but not on the
phone) to move a copy to an IMAP-based folder.

makes sense. until we get exchange 07 on our new server, i was trying to keep
all my sent messages from my phone in sync with everything else like the
desktop is. It's fine though..becasue sorting through a month's worth of
messages everytime it "send and received" too forever, so i guess it's better
this way for now.

thanks so much for your help. you have great knowledge in so many of these
areas.

Brian

I found this thread as I have teh same problem.
I have put the rules in place as you suggest. They work fine in that email
sent via exchange server now goes to the sent folder in exchange server, and
email sent via my IMAP account ends up in the IMAP sent folder - which is
great

The only problem is that they remain highlighted as "unread" in both sent
folders. Is there a way to do make them "read" by default?

Thanks
