How do I size merged cells?

I am trying to sort data on a fairly extensive spread sheet in Excell 2003
Every time I try to sort the data I get a warning that 'this operation
requires the merged cells to be identically sized.' I have no idea what this
means.

Hit CRTL + A to select all cells.

Format>Cells>Aligment. Uncheck "Merge Cells"

Merged cells cause no end of problems when sorting, copying, cutting and
pasting.

Best use of merged cells is as Titles when all your data manipulations are
complete.
