I have written a family genealogy book that is 255 pages and 302 mb and I
want to share it with family who do not have the MS Word software. How do I
do this?

Save it as a PDF file (for which you'll need extra software) and write it to
CDR discs.

It largely depends on what software they will be using. Most likely it will
be able to open an MS Word (.doc) file itself. However most current word
processors support "rich text format". To save your file in rich text
format, click on "File" > "Save as" and in the "Save as type" menu pick
"Rich Text Format" then click on "Save".

Besides the other suggestions you received, you could suggest to your
family members that they can download a free Word viewer from the
Microsoft website:

In addition to the suggestions offered by others, you might suggest that

This will permit them to view and print your document. If you have the
capability to create a PDF, however, this will be more satisfactory because
(a) they probably already have Adobe Reader installed and (b) you can be
certain that your format will not be affected by their default printer.

In addition,

A pdf will be the smallest sized file. Many of your family members may be on
dial-up internet connections making this an important consideration.
Create pdf using http://www.primopdf.com
