How do I set Word as default application to open documents?

When trying to open .doc documents, the computer automatically uses
Wordperfect as the default application that opens these documents. How do I
ensure that Microsoft Word is used as the default application?

Go to start > My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types
under extensions find DOC and to the right should be Microsoft Word
Document.
If not change it.
