i have outlook 2002, i've not done any updates to it, how do i do that. Also
how can i go about setting up an out of office reply in email to send out?
there's noting available in my tools, i don't have exchange, and don't have
the ability to do an outlook template. please help.

The Out of Office assistant is a feature only available using Microsoft
Exchange Server.

The following link is from Microsoft to emulate this functionality in
Outlook versions 98 through 2007. You will create a template yourself (the
instructions show how to do so), then create a rule to respond to all
incoming messages using that template.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311107

You will need to keep your internet connected and Outlook up and running on
your computer in order for this to function. If you are either unwilling or
unable to do so, you should contact your email provider and ask them if they
provide an auto-responder service.

To add to what Joe said, using your ISP for a vacation message is really the better choice as they filter out the spam before applying the vacatin message - leaving Outlook to do this via rule will not filter out spam before responding so you would be confirming your email address for all who spam you.
