How do I set up calculation fields in Word with negative numbers?

I am having problems with calculation fields (Word 2000) and calculating
negative numbers. (I am creating a blance sheet with Deposits + and Debits
-.)

I have a column for Deposits, with a total on the bottom of the page and
then a column for Debits with a total on the bottom. I also have a Starting
Balance field that adds with the Deposits and subtracts with the Debits to
equal a Grand Total. The Grand Total keeps coming up with the Debits +
Deposits and then doubling them.

Example: Starting balance = $100.00, one line is a deposit of $15.00 (the
Grand Total will now show $130.00).

Any suggestions???

Thanks in advance.

You cannot use the result of one calculation as an input to another
calculation.
