How do I set up an attendance tracking calendar in Access?

We are currently using a paper based system to track employee attendance. It
has a year long calendar with a box for each date. In the box, the hours
worked is entered or a code indicating the reason for not working that day
(weekend, jury duty, holiday, ect.). I am looking to have something that
will pull up the next empty date (go back in time for dates not entered) and
let me enter the hours worked, a code, and a potential note for the day. The
big hurdle for me is how to set up something for the calendar, setting one up
and so that it will know what date the next entry is for. I would greatly
appreciate any help you could give me. If you know of a similar system with
a calendar that I can look at, that would be useful too.

Thank you!

G'day Dan,

I think I'd just use Excel (or other spreadsheet) for that - just set up a
table with employees listed down the left and dates across the top.
