How do I set a specified text length?

I am trying to create a template for others to use. I need the new text
entered to sit on top of a line. Such as:

Student Name:_____________

However, when I type the text moves the line and leaves blank space under my
words. Such as:

Student Name: ____Name here__________

Also, the new text moves all the previous text in the document. I have set
this as a template and the same occurs. Any suggestions to fixing this
problem?
