I need to set a password for Windows XP home but I dont want to set up a
user account, just password protect my computer and set a password for the
screensaver.

Does anyone know how to do this?

Thank You

Kevin

Boot to safe mode, log as admin, like you do now, set
password there and your screen saver password then
reboot. That should do it!

It's not a good idea to run the built in Administrator account for day
to day activities. That should be reserved to create new users and as a
fall back if the normal account gets corrupted.

Kevin,

I never set up any of my machines with either user accounts or passwords and
I've been doing so for years. No security problems at all. Of course I
have my system protected with anti-virus and firewall software as well as
anti-spyware and adware applications. The biggest cause of problems with
home, and some business systems, is the use of multiple user accounts and
Windows Logon and other passwords. Just check out the multitude of posts to
this and the other groups regarding these issues. I have never had to
"logon" to any of my systems in years.

See the earlier replies to your post for good answers to your inquiry. Good
luck and don't forget those passwords!

you must setup a user account to have a password on the
screensaver. click on start, control panel, user account
and click on create password. type in your password. click
create password. right click on the desktop. click on the
properties tab, click on screensaver and click password
protect. the password will be the save for both.

I don't believe Windows will have completed installation without your
giving a name and setting up a user account for it with Administrator
status. There will then also be a hidden one called Administrator for
emergencies - and emergencies do happen. Don't mix that with regular
use. But you have to have an account to be able to do anything; go to
Control Panel - User accounts, highlight it and Create password. You
can perfectly well run without a password; but if you have one it is to
the account

Please quote some of the original post for clarity when replying.

You don't realize it, but you already have a user account. That's the
way modern operating systems work. Because you are probably using XP
Home and it goes immediately to the Welcome Screen, the fact that you
are really automatically logging into your user account is transparent.

Go to the User Accounts applet in Control Panel and click on Change an
account. There will be an option to set a password. Choose something
you will remember.

Go to control panel, user account, select the account to set a password for
and select create or change password.
