How do I scan to word 2003 from hp d145?

I recently installed MS Office 2003 on my Optiplex 260. With word xp my hp
d145 would automatically recognize ms word and choose it as the default scan
to program.
With word 2003 i can find no way to get my d145 to recognize the word
program. In other words, i want to be able to scan a document from my d145
directly into a new word document. is this option no longer possible in word
2003?
 
I think this is dependent on the printer, not the WORD software. Someone
correct me if I'm wrong.
