How do I save as a .gif

Outlook wants to automatically save all inserts I receive as a .bmp file.
This looses the animation and movement that come with .gif files. I want to
save email inserts and email attachments as .gif so as to save the movement
in a gif file. Do I have something switched on or off somewhere in Outlook
the cause Outlook to not let me save as a .gif?
