how do I retrieve emails from server

this is the message I get Task 'Personal - Receiving' reported error
(0x800CCC90) : 'Your incoming (POP3) e-mail server has reported an internal
error. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server
administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server responded:
..'When I click on download headers under send/receive I am unable to open
them up I get this message: Item cannot be displayed in reading pane. Item
has not been received from server
 
If you continue to receive this message, contact your server
Did that already? What did they report?
 
I did they had me turn off the firewall, restart outlook and try it again.
it worked, then he had me turn the firewall back on it continued to work.
