my outlokk personal folders file has become corrupted
detect and repair doesn't seem to fix the problem
I have a backup pst file saved on my desktop but if I open it it just
creates a duplicate set of inbox, calendar, contact etc folders

How do I recreate the backup so I only have one version of all the key files
and my inbox is in the right place?

Detect and repair doesn't fix Personal Folders corruption. You must use
scanpst.exe for that.
For restoring a pst-file see;
