How do I rename the userdir ?

I am running winxp home ed with only one user (admin user). The original username name_x has since been renamed to name_y. But the userdir is still c:\Documents and Settings\name__x . How do I change the name of the userdir to reflect the correct username (c:\Documents and Settings\name_y) ?

You don't. You have to create a new user account and delete the old one.
Then the folder name and user name will match. (btw - don't use the hidden
administrator account as your everyday account, create a user with admin
rights for yourself to use)

How about all files & documents contained in the old userdir, do I have to copy all these to the new one ?

Yes copy over any files you need before you delete the user account. (during
the delete user process, in user accounts, it will ask you if you want to
save the files or do it manually)
