how do I remove the start-up password?

I set a password when I bought my XP OS, but find it is too tedious and want
to remove it. Unfortunately the "remove password" button isn't where I would
expect it to be (in Security settings). Can somone point out where it is
skillfully hidden, so I can remove the password?

Assuming this is not the BIOS password, try the Control Panel, User Accounts

Sure, why not make it easier for anyone who gains access to your
computer, whether it's your cousin or a hacker in Romania, from gaining
access to your account.

Bad plan. Set XP to remember the password and boot straight into an account
instead.

Go to Start, run, type "control userpasswords2"

Removing Windows passwords from any system is child's play, so it provides
practically no protection anyway.
