How do I remove the dots between spaces?

On Word Help, it says that those dots between spaces are formatting marks. I
press the button to remove formatting marks, and nothing happens. Every time
I open an old document, there are new dots in the spaces that weren't there
before, and it's causing a real problem. Can anyone help?
 
If you were questioning about two little red dots between spaces, I found this is called 'Smart Tags' (I'm sure the term is used loosely) under Tools, Options in Word 2003
