How do I remove a symbol that looks like a reverse P with a double descender
and solid black.

It sounds like the "show/hide" button is active. If it is depressed (or
"on") that press it to deactivate. If it is hidden, move the tool bar around
until it shows.

It's called a pilcrow and it is an indication of a new paragraph with the
formatting displayed. It is toggled by the similar symbol button on the
toolbar, or CTRL+*
