I was told by Microsoft tech support not to run Windows XP
in safe mode. How do I remove start up programs from
windows XP registry? This way only programs that I select
will run at start up. Thanks.

Hi

You don't need go into the Registry to stop programs running at startup:

From Start>Run type

msconfig

then click on the Startup tab. Any entries in there that you uncheck will
then not startup when Windows does. You can then use the following link to
clear the disabled items:

I'm not sure why you were told that, or what it has to do with
your question, following. Please clarify.

How do I remove start up programs from

You don't have to go to the registry to stop them.

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its
Options to see if it has the choice not to start. Many can easily
and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG
from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the
programs you don't want to start automatically.

What you should do is determine what each program is, what its
value is to you, and what the cost in performance is of its
running all the time. You can get more information about these
with google searches and by asking about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent
informed decision about what you want to keep and what you want
to get rid of.

Best to first try the options in the program itself first. msconfig is
the second, alternative option.

And that was the answer to what question? Do you have a case number? If
so, send it to me via e-mail.

In the meantime:

Check for an option to not having the icon load in the System Tray via the
program(s) in question.

Other options for removal:

Go to Start/Run and type in: msconfig. Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck
accordingly. Then run this script to remove the disabled items from the
registry.

Or...remove the runkeys from here: Start/Run/Regedit

It is useful for some maintenance things as well as times where the
system will not boot normally. Not for day to day use though. That
bald statement sounds like sloppy support
How do I remove start up programs from

First do a Start - Run of MSConfig.exe. Look on the Startup page for
the things you do not want to run, and uncheck them. Exit - do not
bother to reboot, but next time you do there will be a message about
'System Configuration'. Check the 'Do not show again' box and exit.
They will then not run at future startup

note though that some things may put themselves back if you *do* run
them, manually. Check in their Options and uncheck any 'run as windows
starts' box

Then run regedit.exe, open the left pane, explorer style to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig

And you will find each of these disabled items as a subkey, two levels
further down, under either startupreg or startupfolder. Highlight and
delete those subkeys you are sure you will not want to re-enable
