How do I remove an inactive computer from the network.

I'm using Windows XP Pro. I changed the name of a computer on my network and
both the old name and the new name are showing up on the network. How do I
get rid of the old one. I've tried just pressing delete or right clicking
but delete is not an option apparently.

There's no explicit way to remove the old name. It will go away
automatically after a while. Shutting down all of the computers on
the network simultaneously can speed up the process.

I did the same exact thing and got the same problem. Will others on the
network see both computers, and will they have any problems? How long does it
take for the old one to go away?

Others on the network might see the old name for a while. I don't
know of any way to predict how long it will take for the old name to
go away. I'm sorry that I can't give more definite answers.

Others on the network won't have any problems. If they click the old
name, they'll get an error message saying that the computer can't be
found.

I am in no way an expert, but I did make my inactive computer and one that
had a changed name disappear from the list after one attempt by:

1. Shutting down all computers completely.
2. Then unplugging the router for 30 seconds.
3. Next plugged the router back in.
4. Restarted the computer that had the name change and waited for a complete
boot up.
5 Then restarted the rest of the computers.

This got rid of both the "no longer active" computer and the one active
computer's old name that was showing on the list. I sure hope this helps
others.
