how do i remedy this error message

I am using Outlook 2003.

Outlook was working fine for me until all of the sudden. Now, everytime I
try to enter something I get an error message. For instance, if I try to add
a calendar item I get the following message:

"Could not save item. The messaging interface has returned an unknown
error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook."

I have no idea what to do. I cannot even backup my pst file.

What's your PST's size and is it an Outlook 2003 Unicode-format PST or the
older ANSI-format PST?

how do I check the format of my pst?

Right-click the PST's root and choose Properties, then Advanced. The
"Format" field should mention OL 97-2002 if it's an ANSI PST.
