How do I register XP Home?

dumb

I just bought a DELL (Dimension 2400) containing XP Home Edition.
I passed on registering it with MS until I changed some things.
Now I want to do it.
But, stupidly, I can't figure out how - and I surely don't want this
thing to stop running at end of 30 days. I expected a 'balloon'
to pop up occasionally to enable me to do it, but it doesn't happen.

Anyone help?

Thanks

You mean Activate. Registration is voluntary, activation is compulsory.
Go to Start-All programs-Accessories-System Tools and click on "Activate
Windows".

You don't have to activate Dells.

MS doesn't support their software sold by OEMs, like Dell. Registration is
just a waste of your time.

dude, I can tell you for sure, you do need to activate windows. it would be
technically illegal for dell or anyone else beside the user/owner to
activate windows.

Every Dell I have seen that originally came with Windows XP installed
uses BIOS-locking, and activation isn't necessary.

So dude, your surety is absolutely meaningless. "ILLEGAL!" Why do
people make sh*t up when they really don't have an effin' clue about
what they are saying?

That's not true, there are some where one has to, if the OS was reinstalled,
or a hardware change was made, especially the latter. I am fairly sure now,
that all Dell PCs (as well as most other pre-makes), come BIOS loacked with
their own installation disk, but it doesn't apply if the hardware is changed
to a degree.

The only hardware change that is supposed to do it is changing to a non-Dell
BIOS. And as long as you reinstall with the Dell CD, the BIOS-locking
should still be intact. This is the way it is supposed to work. I don't
doubt that sometimes like PA, BIOS-locking does throw a fit. And that the
problem with copy-protection, when it don't work right, the paying customer
gets screwed.

Again, the only change that is SUPPOSED to trigger PA is changing to a
non-DELL BIOS.

Hi kurt,

Another way is if one upgrades a version of the OS buying it from Dell, in
which they send an official MS holographed OEM install disk, which requires
activation no matter. I have experienced this already.

That is just a plain old OEM CD, and they definitely do require activation.
But Dells that come with XP pre-loaded *should* only need to be activated,
if the mobo/BIOS is changed to a non Dell mobo/BIOS.

That it doesn't work sometimes as it is supposed to, is definitely no shock
to me. I won't buy another copy-protected product ever again. And that
really sucks, because I really like the changes MS made with FrontPage 2003.
MS's loss. Anybodies loss that want's to sell me copy-disabling technology
in their products. The hassle just isn't worth it me. Want to sell me a
copy-protected song, $0.05 sounds about right. Want to sell me an $10
copy-protected OS, I might just bite. But as long as the copy-protected
damaged goods are so unreasonably priced, I'll keep my money, and patronize
businesses that treat their customers with the respect that we are due!

Greetings --

Registration is entirely voluntary, so I'll presume you mean
"activation."

Pre-installed OEM operating systems are typically either
pre-activated at the factory or are BIOS-locked and do not required
activation as long as they're installed on the computer with which
they're sold.

The OS will let you know, with frequent reminders, if you do need
to activate. To check for yourself, Start > All Programs >
Accessories > System Tools > Activate Windows. Alternatively, Start >
Run > "C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A." It will probably tell
you that WinXP has already been activated.
